How Does Whitening Work?

Most whitening products contain a chemical compound called peroxide. This compound is responsible for “bleaching” your teeth and removing stains and discoloration. The higher concentration of peroxide that is in a dental product, the more effective it will be. When done in a professional setting, this procedure is safe and comfortable.

What is the Procedure?

At our practice, we use Phillips Zoom whitening technology to brighten our patients’ smiles. This method uses two techniques to boost results. First, we will apply a whitening gel to your teeth. This gel contains a relatively high percentage of peroxide. It has enough of the ingredient to provide great results, without having so much that it causes discomfort. Roughly 99% of Phillips Zoom patients report having little to no sensitivity during their treatment!

After we have applied the gel, we will use an LED light to activate the whitener. We will provide you with a pair of special glasses to keep your eyes safe while the light is turned on. The gel will be on your teeth for 15 minutes at a time. Afterward, you can rinse and we will repeat the process. Once we do this three times, your whitening will be complete! In less than an hour, you can enjoy a beautiful new smile!

How Do I Keep My Teeth Bright?

The longevity of your treatment will depend on several factors, such as your diet and dental hygiene routine. Some foods and drinks are known for causing discoloration. These include foods with dyes and darkly-colored drinks such as coffee, tea, and red wine. Tobacco products can also cause teeth to become dark and stained. To keep your teeth as white as possible, avoid smoking and chewing tobacco.

It is also important to brush and floss your teeth at least two times every day. If you are going to eat or drink something that may cause staining, try to brush your teeth directly afterward. This will clean away food debris and help keep your teeth whiter.
