Sedation

Heart monitor for dental sedationAt Oral Implants & Reconstructive Dentistry, your comfort is our top priority. We understand that many of our patients experience high levels of stress and anxiety when visiting their dentist. To help you feel comfortable and relaxed during your appointment or procedure, we are happy to offer a variety of dental sedation options.

How Can Dental Sedation Help Me?

Many people suffer from dental anxiety. Some studies show that nearly one in every three Americans feel anxious about going to the dentist. There is no reason to feel embarrassed about your fear of going to the dentist. Our compassionate team at Oral Implants & Reconstructive Dentistry has years of experience helping patients feel relaxed and stress-free during their visit.

We offer a variety of dental sedation options to help you feel comfortable. Some medications will numb only a small portion of your mouth so you can be conscious during your treatment. Others will help you feel relaxed and somewhat drowsy, so you can feel comfortable while still being able to communicate with the dentist if needed. Stronger medications will put you into a deep sleep during your procedure. With this option, you will not feel anything at all and will wake up after your appointment has concluded.

What Sedation Options Do You Offer?

Our most common type of dental sedation is a local anesthetic. We use this during every surgery and procedure to ensure our patients do not feel any pain or discomfort. After injecting the anesthetic into your gums, the medicine will numb that area of your mouth. A simple local anesthetic will prevent you from feeling any pain while allowing you to be completely awake during your procedure.

If you want to feel relaxed but still be awake during your visit, we can either offer an oral sedative or nitrous oxide. If you choose the oral sedative, we will prescribe a pill for you to pick up from your preferred pharmacy before your appointment. By taking this medicine a few minutes before your appointment begins, you will be able to feel completely at ease during your visit. Alternatively, we can use nitrous oxide to relieve your anxiety. Nitrous oxide – also known as “laughing gas” – will help you feel numb, relaxed, and somewhat happy. Both of these options allow you to stay awake during treatment.

If you would like to be unconscious for your appointment, we also offer IV sedation. For this option, we will administer an IV just before your treatment. You will quickly fall asleep and will remain unconscious until your appointment has ended.

Are There Any Risks Involved?

Our team has been extensively trained to administer these sedation treatments. We always take precautions to ensure you are completely safe during your visit. Depending on your treatment, you may need a friend or family member to drive you home after your visit. Before recommending a treatment, we will review your oral health and medical history to find the best sedation option for you.
