Sinus Elevation

Dentists looking at x-rays on computer monitorA sinus elevation is a procedure that involves raising the membrane of the maxillary sinuses to introduce a bone graft. If a patient has experienced bone loss in their upper jaw, this operation may be needed before we can install their implants. With decades of experience, our team at Oral Implants & Reconstructive Dentistry can perform this operation to ensure you are in excellent shape before your implant procedure!

When Is a Sinus Elevation Needed?

When placing dental implants, a patient’s bone structure must be strong enough to support their new teeth. If a person’s jaw bone is too thin or weak, it may not be able to hold their implants in place. This is often the case in the upper jaw structure near the maxillary sinuses.

Oral health problems such as periodontal disease and tooth loss can lead to accelerated bone degradation in this area of the mouth. For these patients, our team at Oral Implants & Reconstructive Dentistry can perform a sinus elevation to strengthen the bone and make it possible to install implants.

What Does the Procedure Involve?

To begin, Dr. Heller or Dr. DiDonato will need to gather bone material to use in the graft. The bone material can either be taken from the patient or a donor. They will discuss your options ahead of time to ensure everything is in place before your procedure.

Once we have the material needed for the bone graft, we will schedule your operation. Dr. Heller or Dr. DiDonato will begin by making an incision in the gums below your maxillary sinuses. They will move the tissue aside to access the bone. Next, they will cut into the bone and gently lift it into the sinus cavity. The space below will be filled with your bone graft. Over time, this graft will merge with your preexisting bone to create a thick layer of material suitable for implants.

How Long Will My Recovery Be?

Recovery from a sinus elevation can be anywhere from four to twelve months. After your mouth has fully recovered, we will schedule your implant procedure.
