Many people, when experiencing tooth pain, often wish to have the tooth pulled. For some, it seems like the easiest and fastest way to relieve the pain. Extraction of your tooth, however, is the last resort in dental care, even with extreme tooth pain. Your natural teeth are vital to your oral health and can add years to your life. Retaining chewing function and a proper bite is essential to maintain a healthy and functional smile. Sometimes, when decay and infection are just too severe, a tooth must be pulled. Dr. Rob Heller provides tooth extractions in Lewis Center, OH when necessary.
There are two forms of tooth extraction: Surgical and Simple. The type you need will depend on if the tooth has erupted out of the gum tissue or if it is still below the gumline. Teeth which have erupted are removed using the Simple technique. Those that remain below the gumline are removed Surgically. Regardless of the reason a tooth must be pulled, extractions are only reserved for cases in which no other treatment option will cure the infection or problem.
There are two different types of extractions. The method Dr. Heller uses is based upon which tooth needs to be extracted and the circumstances surrounding the tooth. In both procedures, Dr. Heller will make sure you are completely numb to provide a comfortable experience during your visit.
One type of extraction is called a simple extraction
This occurs when the tooth in question is visible above the gum line and does not need to be cut or sectioned in order to be removed. Dr. Heller will grasp the tooth with forceps and gently move the tooth back and forth to loosen the surrounding supporting tissue enough to allow the tooth’s removal.
The second type of extraction is a surgical extraction
This occurs when the tooth has broken off at the gum line, is still under the gum tissue, or will require sectioning for removal. To see the tooth, the gums must be cut and pulled back. Wisdom teeth are often extracted using this method.
