What is a Mini Dental Implant?

A mini dental implant is similar in appearance to a traditional diameter implant, but it is roughly 1/2 to 1/3 the diameter, making it about the diameter of an average toothpick.  Because is much smaller it can not handle the same force and more mini implants are placed to try to match the ability of the traditional size implants.  The concept here is just as you are thinking, it is similar to removing the traditional sized struts that support your home now and replacing them with thinner ones of the same material.  Clearly, there are disadvantages when comparing.

Some Information on Mini Dental Implants:

  • Can be used for missing teeth in narrow areas, like the lower jaw in the front area.
  • Can help stabilize a lower jaw denture.
  • Potentially can require less bone for placement.
  • Can help maintain less bone than traditional dental implants but more than a missing tooth.

Is a Mini Dental Implant New Technology?

Absolutely not. Don't be fooled here. Mini dental implants are designed to try their best to perform like traditional diameter implants, but they are just smaller, limiting their function.  Many patients are attracted to them soley based on cost, sometimes advertised as "half price."  But did you know that many times twice the amount of mini dental implants are placed to hope to gain the support to try to compare to traditional diameter implants, therefore, raising the price back to as much as the traditional dental implants?

A Message From Dr. Rob:

As a Prosthodontist, I have has been placing dental implants and performing all of the surgeries that go along with them for over 25 years,  I have seen plenty of ideas, systems and instruments come and go.  Throughout my carreer of teaching dentists how to place dental implants and a variety of surgical techniques that accompany this great option of dental implants to help restore patient's mouths all over the world, I have found a troubling circumstance of many doctors limiting their service to their patients to only mini dental implants.  While I do feel their are circumstances in which mini dental implants can be a benefit to the patient, I often see these same doctors try to provide a service of mini dental implants for procedures that I do not agree with.  In these cases, many referred to my office for repair, it seems as the mini dental implants were attempted to be used in a situation that is less than ideal and set the patient further back in treatment and in their own financial well being.

As the Director of The Midwest Implant Institute®, I do not offer instruction on surgical techniques invovling mini dental implants because I have experienced to many of. If you research this topic, you wil find that many of the dental schools and specialty training programs limit their instruction and training to their residents to surgical techniques only invovling traditional dental implants, while excluding mini dental implants.  My number one concern is my for my patients and I will always suggest that if anyone is looking into mini dental implants as a their option for treatment, please seek a second or third opinion. Again, there situations that mini dental implants are an option, but they are not ideal for all treatments of areas of missing teeth.  I am a firm believer in proper surgical training, and with that the patient is rewarded with the long-lasting ideal treatment that will reach all of their dental and oral health goals.
