The Crown Placement Procedure

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped "cap" that fits snuggly over the tooth, completely covering it. Crowns mimic the shape, color, strength and appearance of a tooth. Click on a thumbnail below to view the crown placing procedure.

The Benefits of a Crown Include:

  • Enhancing your appearance
  • Covering discolored teeth
  • Attaching a dental bridge
  • Holding a filling in place
  • To protect a weak or cracked tooth
  • To cover a dental implant
  • To strengthen the teeth
  • To restore a tooth to its natural shape and size

Advantages:

  •  Dental lasers often minimize the discomfort associated with dental surgery, reducing the need for local dental anesthesia and possibly even sedation dentistry.
  • The dental laser seals off blood vessels, minimizing the possibility of bleeding gums and eliminating the need for stitches in some cases.
  • Lasers cleanse and serialize the area better, reducing bacteria and other irritants.
  • The possibility of post-surgery complications, including swelling, infection and pain, are significantly reduced.
  • Patients report that less post-treatment healing time is required with dental laser surgery.

What is a Dental Crown and How Does it Work?

A dental crown is a restoration that will look, feel, and function like your natural tooth. It is tooth colored and tooth shaped, fitting snuggly over your tooth. For the procedure, Dr. Heller will numb the area, reshape and rebuild the tooth needing the dental crown, and take an impression of the tooth to be sent to a lab where the final crown will be made. A temporary crown is made and put in place while the permanent crown is fabricated, a process that typically takes about two to three weeks. At the following appointment, the permanent crown will be securely cemented into place.

Do I Need a Dental Crown?

Tooth decay is not the only reason you might need a crown. Other reasons may include:
  • To keep teeth from fracturing or breaking. When a tooth is cracked, a dental crown can be used to strengthen it and keep it from breaking completely.
  • To restore teeth affected by tooth decay. When tooth decay is extensive, and damages a great deal of tooth structure, a filling is often not enough to provide needed support. A dental crown can be placed to hold the tooth together and restore it to health.
  • Your teeth are discolored or not shaped correctly. Crowns can be shaded and shaped to any specifications, which offers an excellent means of creating a bright, uniform smile.
  • You have severely worn teeth. Dental crowns can be used to rebuild your teeth and restore a functional bite.
  • You have had a root canal. Root canals weaken a tooth (but are at times necessary to save it). A dental crown is typically needed to restore and maintain your tooth’s strength and function after this procedure.
