What Are Dental Crowns and Who Needs Them?

Dental crowns, often called "caps," are custom-designed restorations that completely cover damaged teeth. They protect, strengthen, and restore teeth that have been compromised by various conditions, such as:

  • Teeth that are chipped, fractured, or cracked
  • Significant tooth decay or extensive fillings
  • Wear caused by grinding (bruxism) or simply the passage of time
  • Teeth that are misshapen or severely discolored
  • Teeth needing reinforcement following root canal treatment

If you’re experiencing any of these issues, crowns can offer an excellent solution to restore function and enhance your appearance. Our skilled team will thoroughly examine your dental health and work closely with you to find the best path forward.

What to Expect: The Dental Crown Procedure

Getting a dental crown at OIRD usually involves two visits:

First Visit: Preparing Your Tooth and Crafting Your Crown

During your initial consultation, Dr. Heller will discuss your concerns, carefully examine your dental health, and create a personalized treatment plan. We'll gently shape your tooth, removing damaged or weakened areas to accommodate the crown. Afterward, detailed impressions or digital scans of your tooth are taken to ensure your custom crown is crafted to perfection in a specialized dental lab. In the meantime, you'll receive a temporary crown to keep your tooth protected and comfortable.

Second Visit: Placing Your Fixed Crown

At your next appointment, we'll remove your temporary crown and carefully place your final one. Your dentist will meticulously ensure it feels comfortable, looks natural, and aligns properly with your bite. Once we’re confident everything fits just right, your crown is securely bonded, leaving you with a renewed, confident smile.

Considering Dental Bridges?

When missing teeth affect your smile, dental bridges can offer a reliable solution. A dental bridge fills the gap by placing crowns on healthy teeth on either side, supporting replacement teeth. This restores not only your appearance but also improves your bite, speech, and oral function. Similar to crowns, bridges generally involve a two-step process to ensure the best fit and natural appearance.

Are Crowns Covered by Insurance?

OIRD is a fee-for-service practice, meaning payment is due at your appointment. To make the process easier for you, our friendly administrative team will gladly submit claims to most dental insurance carriers on your behalf (excluding Medicare, Medicaid, or medical insurance). Caring For Your New Dental Crown

Taking good care of your restoration will help ensure it remains attractive and functional for years:

  • Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled brush.
  • Floss gently around your crown or bridge daily.
  • Avoid overly hard or crunchy foods like ice or popcorn kernels.
  • Keep up with regular dental check-ups and cleanings every six months.
  • Consider using a custom mouthguard if you grind your teeth.

Common Questions About Dental Crowns

Should I choose a crown or have my tooth extracted?

We always aim to preserve your natural teeth whenever possible. Crowns protect and strengthen your existing teeth, preventing future complications.

What’s the typical cost of crowns and bridges?

Costs vary depending on individual cases. We’ll provide a detailed and transparent estimate at your consultation.

Are there drawbacks to crowns and bridges?

Crowns and bridges are highly effective, but complex aesthetic or structural situations may require additional restorative treatments. We'll carefully assess your needs to determine the best solution.

How long can I expect crowns and bridges to last?

With proper care, these restorations typically last 10–15 years, and many last even longer. Our team will guide you on maintaining their longevity.
